Hiatus explores the notion of break in a very literal sense, as in, consciously breaking, disassembling the order of things. It can be read as a break in the continuity of a work, an attempt to a more intuitive approach to art-making that seeks to inverse the hierarchy of doing and thinking. It explores different forms of violence, as there is a violence in overly controlling a situation, forcing things into a specific order and in the act of deliberate destruction. The idea for Hiatus comes from personal experiences of frustration, powerlessness, it is an investigation into the therapeutical potential of destruction. In everyday life, we are often forced into a certain role, confronted with certain expectations.
Especially, still, as a woman, we are expected to be understanding and gentle. Hiatus is a reaction to those expectations, an attempt to break through those invisible boundaries. At the same time, it seeks to transmit the satisfaction that lies in destruction, to capture the joy of the forbidden.
